Award Categories

The Crystal Cabin Awards 2021 are going to be presented in two special categories.

This category comprises all cabin related concepts and products that address health & safety aspects for the passenger and crew. The entry should provide either a benefit for the passenger/ crew or a benefit for the airline.

The entry can also focus on elements of the entire customer journey and must be implementable within approximately two years, which also includes university entries. The concept or product should not be older than one year and go beyond general health & safety measures.

(e.g. Air filtration - Anti-microbial surfaces -Touchless items inseat/ bins/ in lavatories/ touchless lavatory door opener - Lighting that makes passengers see the cabin is “lean” to ensure trust (for pax) - Antimicrobial material - Material that resists UV-light-cleaning - Dry flush in the lavatory - Head shields, partitions/ dividers - Realtime disinfection - Software/ digital processes/ apps that support passengers in every situation directly related to his voyage (incl. facilitating contactless procedures & movement in the cabin but also at the airport) - IoT proposals in the cabin - Service procedures - End-to-end solutions to ensure comfort of passengers and many more.)

This award category is spanning the time until the “new normal” with its many categories. All innovative cabin related concepts & products for outstanding achievements on the field of civil aircraft interior development can be entered in this category if it provides either a benefit for the passenger or for the airline.

The entry, that is not health & safety related, can also focus on elements of the customer journey and must be implementable within approximately two years, which also includes university entries. The concept or product should not be older than two years.

(e.g. Complete cabins, IoT, lighting, seats, galleys, lavatories, floor covering, panels, bins, IFEC, software, apps, electrical systems, electronic cabin management systems, waste & potable water systems, acoustics and many more.)

The Crystal Cabin Award 2020 received 105 applications in eight categories.

This category is provided for complete cabins that are already existent. Different cabin elements are composed to one product. Cabin Concepts can be submitted by airlines as well as by aircraft manufacturers and design companies. Applicants should explain why their product is innovative as requested for every category.

The category Cabin Systems comprises all new products that mean a major benefit for the airline e.g. seats, galleys, lavatories, trolleys, air conditioning, electrical systems, electronic cabin management systems, waste & potable water systems, acoustics and many more. Efficiency of mechanical solutions will be evaluated e.g. Further criteria are ergonomic advantages and ease of implementation.

This category comprises the fastest growing product range in the aviation industry and has become extremely important for the passenger. It includes e.g. IFE, connectivity such as antennas, passenger Apps, moving maps, unique Wifi features etc.

This category combines different classes of innovations. An entry for this category must either reduce negative effects on the environment, or it must minimize health or safety hazards and security problems for passengers, staff or live cargo. European and international legislation compliance will be taken into consideration for the evaluation of the entry. The innovation should not restrict an individual’s comfort unnecessarily to gain high marks.

Developing new materials, new material applications or a new combination of materials for cabin systems can cut production costs and maximize usability. This category embraces an enormous variety of different aircraft components. Entries can be an innovative, single technical component, or material, but not a fully developed product like a seat.

Travelling comfortably is an important business factor for airlines. This category has been created for great demands in passenger comfort. Therefore entries must improve passenger comfort within the cabin, either for all passengers or for specific groups of passengers. An innovation that is of general use to a large group of individuals may well achieve higher marks due to its increased effectiveness for the airline´s success. This category includes e.g. economy seats, lavatories, bins, partitions, lighting system, linings, premium, business, first class products, VIP products etc.

This category provides room for college and university students to present their visions for innovative products and concepts for aircraft interior. It should reflect the idea of making flying more comfortable or ecological. By submitting an application in this category students would benefit from gaining important contacts within the industry regarding their professional future.

Visionary Concepts can give us an impression of aircraft cabins of tomorrow. How can we provide air transport in the future without loss of comfort while current technologies and practices (especially carbon based fuel) become more and more limiting? How can passenger comfort and aircraft efficiency even be raised? This category relates to concepts that have not yet been implemented.
